Do it now...

don't delay, don't put it off for another day...

Any other Patch fans out there know this song?
I was tired of "what's gonna work? TEAMWORK! what's gonna work?..." So I taught the kids this Patch the Pirate song instead.
We were making good use of it this afternoon giving the living room (and by virtue of putting many things in their proper place, the rest of the house) a good cleaning.
Now, I don't normally appreciate or share "potty humor" but this is too funny. Joey was taking a potty break and Jessi kept going to the bathroom door and singing to him, "Do it NOW, don't DELAY.." and finally Joey had had enough. I hear, "Listen Jessi, I am a SLOW person, I do NOT like that song! STOP singing it to me!"

At this same time, Joy woke up from her nap and had to go potty as well. We only have one bathroom and while I do have a little potty chair for Joy to use in emergencies, I thought that Joey could indeed speed things up and get out. As he came out, I ran Joy in and put her on the potty, fussed with the skirt of her dress and made sure that her sash wasn't going to go in. She seemed rather distressed but since I only understand about 1/4 of her 1 year old gibberish, I missed the message. By the time I caught on to the reason, it was too late. Poor kid, I had put her on the potty but not taken down her panties.

The message here? I don't know... Some things need to be done NOW, and some things it pays to take an extra second and be thorough.

Very funny! She is potty trained at 1? Wow! Katy is three and doing well but not totally trained...she did have some setbacks with some physical problems and what not. Had to end up having surgery last year..but doing well now. That is really cool though.

She is pretty well potty learned, I start early and use techniques known as elimination communication. In a nutshell, ist them on the potty before bathtime starting about 7-8 months, they will eventually go on "accident" while they are sitting there and you do your little dance and praise them. Keep doing that, just whenever it's convenient (like at bathtime) and every time they go, you praise them. Babies at that age love to do whatever it takes to make you excited so soon the learn that is what the potty is for. Then I'll start taking them other times of the day, especially right after naps, or 30 minutes after they eat. By 10 months, Joy was signing to me that she needed potty --or that she had already gone. She learned to poo first and I rarely had to change a poo diaper after about 10-11 months (which is NICE since I cloth diaper!).
She started staying dry at night about 15 months, and I started putting her in panties about 18 months. She's now 20 months and we can go days without an accident.

Joey was my first and took a little longer; I didn't start him quite as early, then he had some physical issues (and had surgery) and that slowed him down a bit too. His last hold out was learning to poo on the potty and not be afraid. I love that Joy learned that first; SO many toddlers have a big issue with that, but Joy has been doing it for so long that it's no big deal.
Some people comment that it sounds like too much work, but honestly, I am LAZY, so if it sounds like work, I am just describing it wrong! Any fewer diapers I have to change is a plus in my book!

And it's not about "forcing them to train too soon" I don't even call it potty-training, I call it "potty-readiness", put them on the potty so they know what it's for, then when they are big enough to communicate, they can tell me. They tell us when they are hungry dont' they?
I am amazed as I do research on it... pretty much all around the world they do something similar to this, we are the only ones to use diapers so extensively. It's very interesting!

Jody that is so cool! I read an article about this once and because we Americans are so BRAINWASHED to do what everyone else does, it didn't sink in with me that it can actually be done.
That is really neat. I did cloth with Ryan for the most part and he trained earlier than my other 2 who used disposables. Too bad I didn't catch on to this stuff when my oldest was a baby.
